My emphasis is <b>bold<\/b> and comments <b><span style=\"color: blue\">blue<\/span><\/b><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif\">&nbsp;Why do I say &#8220;Just like the old days&#8221;? Well, in the papal encyclical <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www3.nd.edu\/Departments\/Maritain\/etext\/aeterni.htm\">Aeterni Patris<\/a><\/i>, Leo XIII talks about restoring philosophy to its former glory&#8211;to the days when philosophy entailed more than just explaining our own subjective consciousness and the results of modern science. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\">\n<div id=\"seccion_principal\" style=\"background-color: white\">\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/philosophicalmormonism.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/05\/big-bang.jpeg?w=640\" style=\"clear: right;float: right;margin-bottom: 1em;margin-left: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"230\" src=\"http:\/\/philosophicalmormonism.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/05\/big-bang.jpeg?w=640\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;margin-top: 12px;padding: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif\">Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski said that the study of that which lies beyond the physical realm can help scientists reflect on the meaning of their work, and avoid putting their knowledge at the service of evil.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;margin-top: 12px;padding: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif\">During the International Metaphysics Congress held in Rome on Nov. 8, Cardinal Grocholewski told EWTN News that science has unfortunately led to the creation of instruments that bring evil to the world <b><span style=\"color: blue\">[always because of human actions as the objects are never evil in themselves&#8211;but it is possible to make something that is for the purpose of evil actions]<\/span><\/b>, and that people must address this reality.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;margin-top: 12px;padding: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif\">\u201cWe have to reflect profoundly on the question of what the meaning of science and its research is.&nbsp;<b>What is the meaning of man<\/b> and what does it consist of?\u201d said the cardinal, who serves as the prefect for the Congregation for Catholic Education.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;margin-top: 12px;padding: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif\">In the modern world, Metaphysics must be acknowledged as something \u201cabsolutely necessary for carrying out science and using it in the correct way.\u201d <b><span style=\"color: blue\">[He is referring to teleology mainly and that in itself means that there is a &#8220;correct way&#8221; to use something.]<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;margin-top: 12px;padding: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif\">\u201cWe have to ask ourselves, what is the meaning of science? What is science for? These are difficult questions, but they are necessary, because science ought to contribute to the good of humanity,\u201d the cardinal added.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;margin-top: 12px;padding: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif\">He also pointed out that the human being is capable of distinguishing between good and evil and scientists are not exempt from this.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;margin-top: 12px;padding: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif\">\u201cWe all know well that the great scientific and technological discoveries can be used for both good and evil. They have often been used for evil: for wars that are increasingly more horrific, for injustices, for terrorism and oppression,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;margin-top: 12px;padding: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif\">Cardinal Grocholewski said metaphysics <b><span style=\"color: blue\">[including natural law]<\/span><\/b> would alleviate humanity of numerous threats, such as weapons of mass destruction or drugs that pose a danger to human life.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;margin-top: 12px;padding: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif\">\u201cThere has been much <b>progress<\/b> in the world, but the reality is there is misery and injustice.\u201d <b><span style=\"color: blue\">[This is a slightly unrelated statement&#8230;I wonder if it was taken out of context&#8230;]<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;margin-top: 12px;padding: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif\">Without metaphysics, he continued, \u201cneither philosophy nor religion would exist, nor the great ideals that can change history.\u201d <b><span style=\"color: blue\">[Well put.]<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;margin-top: 12px;padding: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif\">\u201cDoing\u201d must never overshadow \u201cbeing,\u201d the cardinal said.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ewtnnews.com\/catholic-news\/World.php?id=6560#ixzz2CR3ziMVn\">http:\/\/www.ewtnnews.com\/catholic-news\/World.php?id=6560#ixzz2CR3ziMVn<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/heartofphilosophy.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/metaphysics.jpg\" style=\"clear: right;float: right;margin-bottom: 1em;margin-left: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"106\" src=\"http:\/\/heartofphilosophy.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/metaphysics.jpg\" width=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>I wonder how many people out there in the world actually know what metaphysics is beyond its phony section in Barnes and Noble&#8230;<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I know this isn&#039;t news to any of the readers of this blog, but I thought it was important to post articles that fit right in with the purpose of my writing here.
