{"id":13966,"date":"2012-07-18T16:23:00","date_gmt":"2012-07-18T21:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.catholiconnection.com\/2012\/07\/another-one-bites-the-dust.html"},"modified":"2012-07-18T16:23:00","modified_gmt":"2012-07-18T21:23:00","slug":"another-one-bites-the-dust","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jonhaines.com\/philosophy\/another-one-bites-the-dust\/","title":{"rendered":"Another One Bites the Dust&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left\">One of the oldest universities in Europe (notice I didn&#039;t say oldest Catholic university since they were ALL&nbsp;Catholic)&#8230;makes a declaration of independence.<\/p>\n<p>The Catholic University of Leuven, or of Louvain, was the largest, oldest and most prominent university in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Belgium\">Belgium<\/a>.&nbsp;The un<span>iversity was founded in 1425 as the University of Leuven by&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_IV,_Duke_of_Brabant\">John IV, Duke of Brabant<\/a> and approved by a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Papal_bull\">Papal bull<\/a> by Pope <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martin_V\">Martin V<\/a>.&nbsp;<span style=\"background-color: white;line-height: 19px;text-align: -webkit-auto\">In 1968 the university split to form two institutions:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 0.1em\"><span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Katholieke_Universiteit_Leuven\" style=\"color: #0b0080;text-decoration: none\" title=\"Katholieke Universiteit Leuven\">Katholieke Universiteit Leuven<\/a>, Dutch-speaking, situated in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leuven\" style=\"color: #0b0080;text-decoration: none\" title=\"Leuven\">Leuven<\/a>; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 0.1em\"><span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Universit%C3%A9_catholique_de_Louvain\" style=\"color: #0b0080;text-decoration: none\" title=\"Universit\u00e9 catholique de Louvain\">Universit\u00e9 catholique de Louvain<\/a>, French-speaking, situated in nearby&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louvain-la-Neuve\" style=\"color: #0b0080;text-decoration: none\" title=\"Louvain-la-Neuve\">Louvain-la-Neuve<\/a>, in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wallonia\" style=\"color: #0b0080;text-decoration: none\" title=\"Wallonia\">Wallonia<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span><br \/><\/span><br \/><span>And yet&#8230;.we find another all too common revolution taking place:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p><a href=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/0\/0e\/Castle_Arenberg,_Katholieke_Universiteit_Leuven_adj.jpg\" style=\"clear: right;float: right;margin-bottom: 1em;margin-left: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"224\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/0\/0e\/Castle_Arenberg,_Katholieke_Universiteit_Leuven_adj.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><span><b style=\"text-align: -webkit-auto\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kath.net\/detail.php?id=37370\">The five episcopal board members will only undertake an advisory function in the future, but may not decide on scientific projects like stem cell research<\/a>.<\/b><br style=\"text-align: -webkit-auto\" \/><br style=\"text-align: -webkit-auto\" \/><span style=\"text-align: -webkit-auto\">Brussels\/Leuven&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/kath.net\/detail.php?id=37370\" style=\"color: #1155cc;text-align: -webkit-auto\" target=\"_blank\">(kath.net\/KNA)&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/a><span style=\"text-align: -webkit-auto\">In Belgium the Catholic University of Leuven has revoked its voting rights on the highest board of the University.&nbsp; The five bishop members of the board will play only an advisory role in the future, but may not decide over scientific projects like stem cell research, reported the Belgian media of the University&#039;s&nbsp; leadership.&nbsp; Among the 30 persons included on the board also belongs the President of the Belgian Bishops&#039; Conference, Archbishop Andre-Joseph Leonard von Mechelen-Br\u00fcssel.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"background-color: white\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p><span><span style=\"text-align: -webkit-auto\">The University explained in reports, that this decision took place after long consideration. <b><span style=\"color: blue\">[I wonder why it took so long? The last bit of respect for the founders of the university twinging at their consciences?]<\/span><\/b> The Catholic University was indeed founded by the Bishops, but now according to its new mission statement will continue independently regardless. For that reason the word &#8220;Catholic&#8221; in the name of the University also comes under discussion. The current board decided to use the official designation KU Leuven. The &gt;&gt;K&lt;&lt; should in any case not be obligatory. Internationally, the name &#8220;University of Leuven&#8221; will be used.&nbsp;<\/span><br style=\"text-align: -webkit-auto\" \/><br style=\"text-align: -webkit-auto\" \/><span style=\"text-align: -webkit-auto\">According to reports, the University stressed its independence in its new mission statement. An independent administration is an essential precondition for academic freedom.<\/span><br style=\"text-align: -webkit-auto\" \/><br style=\"text-align: -webkit-auto\" \/><span style=\"text-align: -webkit-auto\">The reason for the initiative was brought among other things by statements of Archbishop Leonard in 2010. The Bishops&#039; President had described AIDS as a consequence of misconduct and described it as a form of imminent justice. <span style=\"color: blue\"><b>[Which indeed it is. If you can&#039;t see past the immanent cause (modern empirical science only sees it as an exchange of a virus) and see past to the fact that sodomy is contrary to nature. (the case where the vast majority of blood would be exchanged) Using the term &#039;Contrary to nature&#8221; doesn&#039;t imply that it never occurs in nature, it simply means that this act is not perfective of that beings nature.]<\/b><\/span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Wonderful.<\/p>\n<p>If the statement of the Archbishop was really the cause of this move by the board of the university&#8230;it is just one more example where the abandonment of the classical teleological system of science (which includes the empirical science espoused by the researchers). This abandonment has sparked a widespread perception that any discussion of &#8220;the good&#8221; or &#8220;justice&#8221; or abstract ideas must be excluded &nbsp;from any discussion or action based on the same&#8211;science in the classical sense.
