He makes an analysis of what Catholics need to do to be more effective online. Komen felt intense pressure to reverse its decision&nbsp;because of the massive social media campaign waged against it. Planned Parenthood and left-wing social media won the battle to dominate the messaging war, mostly because they\u2019ve <b>invested time in training their supporters to be online activists<\/b>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: transparent;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-color: initial;border-left-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-top-width: 0px;color: #585757;line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 19px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;vertical-align: top\"><span>I could name more examples but it\u2019s enough just to trust me \u2014 Catholics are not well represented when it comes to online social activism. And many of us who are engaged are not well trained or intentional about how we do it. We can make huge strides by a) recruiting more social media activists and b) training them to be more effective.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: transparent;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-color: initial;border-left-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-top-width: 0px;color: #585757;line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 19px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;vertical-align: top\"><span>Because, as it stand now, even though our forces fight valiantly, we are outnumbered and outgunned&nbsp;<em style=\"background-color: transparent;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-color: initial;border-left-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-top-width: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-left: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-top: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\">online<\/em>, and&nbsp;<em style=\"background-color: transparent;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-color: initial;border-left-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-top-width: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-left: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-top: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\">when we lose online, it is far harder to win at all. period.<\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: transparent;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-color: initial;border-left-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-top-width: 0px;line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 19px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;vertical-align: top\"><span><span style=\"color: #585757\">I don\u2019t know about you, but I don\u2019t enjoy losing <\/span><span style=\"color: blue\"><b>[Nor I]<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #585757\"> \u2014 especially when losing is completely avoidable.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: transparent;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-color: initial;border-left-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-top-width: 0px;color: #585757;line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 19px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;vertical-align: top\"><span>So let me suggest some steps we can all take to stop failing at online social activism and start winning instead.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: transparent;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-color: initial;border-left-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-top-width: 0px;line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 19px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;vertical-align: top\"><span><span style=\"color: #585757\">While&nbsp;it is true that blogs still play a vital role when it comes to articulating and arguing the truth of our positions, the impact of&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"color: #585757;font-weight: bold\">Facebook<\/strong><span style=\"color: #585757\">,&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"color: #585757;font-weight: bold\">Twitter<\/strong><span style=\"color: #585757\">&nbsp;and&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"color: #585757;font-weight: bold\">online petitions<\/strong><span style=\"color: #585757\">&nbsp;is more immediate when it comes to&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"background-color: transparent;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-color: initial;border-left-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-top-width: 0px;color: #585757;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-left: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-top: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;text-decoration: underline;vertical-align: baseline\">influencing perception,<\/span><span style=\"color: #585757\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"background-color: transparent;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-color: initial;border-left-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-top-width: 0px;color: #585757;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-left: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-top: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;text-decoration: underline;vertical-align: baseline\">creating momentum<\/span><span style=\"color: #585757\">, and&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"background-color: transparent;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-color: initial;border-left-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-top-width: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-left: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-top: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\"><u style=\"color: #585757\">showing strength in numbers. <\/u><b><span style=\"color: blue\">[Very true. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BattlefortheCoreoftheWorld\">Facebook Like mine <\/a>and<a href=\"http:\/\/facebook.com\/catholicvote\"> Thomas&#039; (Not being a part of social media activism, how would they know?) But it does \u2014 trust me. Otherwise why does every left-wing activist group, not to mention businesses and politicians, invest so much time and money into developing a social media network? <\/span><span style=\"color: blue\"><b>[Exactly. 26 Million individual people have &#039;liked&#039; Obama on Facebook. Only 39,500 like Pope Benedict XVI. Now it could be that Pope Benedict just isn&#039;t that popular. But when one is the leader of a 1 billion member organization versus a 300 million member situation, one might want to check into how active the membership is on Facebook. George W. Bush, president for an equal number of years as Obama has only 1.5 million likes. In both cases, we all know that older folks lean towards liking more conservatives&#8230;.but by a difference of 95%????? No. Progressives are more active. It is an essential component of &#8220;progress&#8221;.]<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: transparent;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-color: initial;border-left-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-top-width: 0px;color: #585757;line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 19px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;vertical-align: top\"><span>The second most common excuse I get is that personal interactions matter more. Sure, they do. But you can help the culture in more than one way, and unless you are constantly helping the culture in other ways, why not add social media to your arsenal? I can think of few more effective ways to make a positive impact for the time and effort invested.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: transparent;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-color: initial;border-left-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-top-width: 0px;color: #585757;line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 19px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;vertical-align: top\"><strong style=\"font-weight: bold\"><span>2. Join the Network<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: transparent;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-color: initial;border-left-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-top-width: 0px;line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 19px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;vertical-align: top\"><span><span style=\"color: #585757\">If you haven\u2019t already, join Facebook and Twitter and get familiar with using them. Get to know the lingo. Next, like (or follow, if we\u2019re talking Twitter) causes, organizations and people who fight for the Catholic values you believe in and start passing on what they are talking about and the actions they are promoting to your social network. Yes, this is a common idea taught in many universities. Its not wonder philosophy has been thrown out in favor of science, because its in the very nature of science to provide large numbers. Drop a pen to the ground 1000 times and if every time it falls to the ground&#8230;then that is the truth of the situation because of the frequency of it happening.
