{"id":14074,"date":"2012-04-13T20:44:00","date_gmt":"2012-04-14T01:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.catholiconnection.com\/2012\/04\/san-diego-not-a-single-priest-or-professor-would-join-the-students-in-prayer.html"},"modified":"2012-04-13T20:44:00","modified_gmt":"2012-04-14T01:44:00","slug":"san-diego-not-a-single-priest-or-professor-would-join-the-students-in-prayer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jonhaines.com\/philosophy\/san-diego-not-a-single-priest-or-professor-would-join-the-students-in-prayer\/","title":{"rendered":"San Diego: Not a Single Priest or Professor Would Join the Students in Prayer"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span>We have some disappointing news from the Cardinal Newmans Society which continues to inform us on the sad state of Catholic higher education in many places in the United States:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\">\n<h2 class=\"entry-title\">  <span>Priest at USD: No Professor or Chaplain Was Willing to Pray with These&nbsp;Students<\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"entry-content\" style=\"background-color: white;color: #484848\">\n<div style=\"line-height: 15pt;margin-bottom: 10.5pt;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px\"><span>The University of San Diego, a Catholic&nbsp;institution,&nbsp;hosted a drag show this week despite several protests and prayers from alumni, students, and even a local priest.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 15pt;margin-bottom: 10.5pt;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gay-sd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/logo-university-of-san-diego.gif\" style=\"clear: right;float: right;margin-bottom: 1em;margin-left: 1em\"><span><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gay-sd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/logo-university-of-san-diego.gif\" \/><\/span><\/a><span>In&nbsp;response, a group of alumni requested permission from the university\u2019s administration <b>to use the chapel to pray the rosary during the event but were denied<\/b>, prominent alumnus <\/span><br \/><span>Charles LiMandri told The Cardinal Newman Society. But six USD students along with a priest from a nearby parish knelt outside the event, praying the rosary amid a larger group of pro-drag show students who assembled in a counter demonstration.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 15pt;margin-bottom: 10.5pt;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px\"><span>Father Jacob Bertrand of St. Rose of Lima, a Catholic parish in nearby Chula Vista, participated in the prayer group outside the&nbsp;event. He told The Cardinal Newman Society <b>he heard about the drag show through Facebook and decided<\/b><\/span><br \/><a name=\"&#039;more&#039;\"><\/a><span><b> to join the six students<\/b> in prayer. He said when he arrived there, he was surprised and saddened to see he was the only priest with the students on a Catholic campus.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 15pt;margin-bottom: 10.5pt;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px\"><span>\u201cNo professor or chaplain there was willing to do pray with these students,\u201d he said. \u201cBut these kids stood up against all of that. <b>I hoped that my presence showed them that their shepherds will stand beside them. If we\u2019re not leading them, we\u2019ll at least show up.\u201d<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 15pt;margin-bottom: 10.5pt;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px\"><span>Father Bertrand said that other priests on campus&nbsp;weren\u2019t just absent. It was far worse than that. He said that while he was speaking with the media and some counter demonstrators about the Church\u2019s stance on sexuality, <b>another priest came up behind him and \u201cscoffed\u201d at everything Father Bertrand said<\/b>. \u201cHe was very antagonistic,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 15pt;margin-bottom: 10.5pt;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px\"><span>\u201cI was hoping my collar would show a unified front. But then another man with a collar showed the division,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was disturbing. All the stuff I got done saying, he spoke for a few minutes, undid it all, and confused it again.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 15pt;margin-bottom: 10.5pt;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px\"><span>Father Bertrand said he has great hope in the students who prayed&nbsp;at the school but little in the administration. \u201cMy hope is that the students will&nbsp;feel empowered to live out their faith as authentically as they desire to,\u201d he said. \u201cMaybe they\u2019ll attract another student who sees something joyful about this authentic Catholic life. This is the way&nbsp;USD will transform. It won\u2019t be through administration or faculty. It won\u2019t be through staff. It\u2019ll have to be the students.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trbimg.com\/img-4f866fd1\/turbine\/kswb-usd-drag-show-sparks-protests-20120411\/400\/16x9\" style=\"clear: left;float: left;margin-bottom: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trbimg.com\/img-4f866fd1\/turbine\/kswb-usd-drag-show-sparks-protests-20120411\/400\/16x9\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 15pt;margin-bottom: 10.5pt;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px\"><span>Father Bertrand said there\u2019s \u201csomething drastically wrong\u201d with USD when students and alumni aren\u2019t encouraged to pray, but the administration \u201cpulls out all the bells and whistles for a drag show.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 15pt;margin-bottom: 10.5pt;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px\"><span>Stuart Weiss, the student who led the rosary outside the event, told The Cardinal Newman Society he hoped some good would come out of all this. \u201cBelieve it or not, I think this has been a good thing. It\u2019s been under the radar, but this university has been like this for a while and it hasn\u2019t been addressed,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s no hiding the fact that USD is not living up to its Catholic name. Now maybe people will have to do something about it.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 15pt;margin-bottom: 10.5pt;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px\"><span>Doing something about it is exactly what prominent alumnus and attorney Charles LiMandri&nbsp;intends to do. He said he hopes that this \u201cawful event\u201d will inspire a turnaround in the university. LiMandri sent out a letter to a group of alumni describing the event earlier this week. He said that already several major donors have&nbsp;told him that they will not be donating any more to the university in light of the event. LiMandri &nbsp;even started a website called&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.alumniforacatholicusd.org\/\" style=\"color: #771515\">Alumni for a Catholic USD<\/a>&nbsp;to inspire other alumni to get involved.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 15pt;margin-bottom: 10.5pt;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px\"><span>As for the drag show itself, video was strictly prohibited. The Cardinal Newman Society spoke with one man who said he was asked to turn off his video camera inside.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 15pt;margin-bottom: 10.5pt;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px\"><span>But one professor at the drag show, a gay marriage advocate, even went so far as to compare the drag show to Shakespeare, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theusdvista.com\/news\/usd-hosts-first-ever-drag-show-1.2846178\" style=\"color: #771515\">the student newspaper<\/a>.<\/span><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div style=\"line-height: 15pt;margin-bottom: 10.5pt;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px\"><span>Lori Watson, professor of philosophy and director of the gender studies program, began the show with a lecture that included the historical roots of the word \u201cdrag.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 15pt;margin-bottom: 10.5pt;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px\"><span>\u201cIt\u2019s important to note that men dressing as women for entertainment and performance goes back to the Ancient Greeks,\u201d Watson said. \u201cIn the theater and performance of Greek plays, men acted in female roles\u2013so too did men perform the female roles, dressed as women, in Shakespeare\u2019s time.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"line-height: 15pt;margin-bottom: 10.5pt;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px\"><span>LiMandri said he studied Shakespeare at Oxford University. \u201cComparing men doing a theatrical performance with no sexual connotations to what\u2019s going on on that stage is just intellectually dishonest,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/div>\n<table cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" class=\"tr-caption-container\" style=\"float: left;margin-right: 1em;text-align: left\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidesocal.com\/outinthe562\/BIDS2011.jpg\" style=\"clear: left;margin-bottom: 1em;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"213\" src=\"http:\/\/www.insidesocal.com\/outinthe562\/BIDS2011.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"tr-caption\" style=\"text-align: center\">&#8220;Education at USD&#8221;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<div style=\"line-height: 15pt;margin-bottom: 10.5pt;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px\"><span>Despite the University\u2019s attempts to paint this as an \u201ceducational\u201d event,&nbsp; LiMandri said, \u201cThis isn\u2019t education. It\u2019s highly sexually inappropriate.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 15pt;margin-bottom: 10.5pt;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px\"><span>The student body president told reporters outside the event, \u201cThere is nothing wrong with having a drag show at USD because what it is, it\u2019s the LGBT community expressing themselves as they feel comfortable doing so. It\u2019s these people who might ground their bigotry in prayer that are the ones that attack us, but that doesn\u2019t make sense because we know that we\u2019re a member of this human family and all that we\u2019re trying to do is show each other who we are.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 15pt;margin-bottom: 10.5pt;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px\"><span>The administration didn\u2019t respond to questions concerning these events&nbsp;by the time of publication.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span><br \/><\/span><br \/><span>Congratulations USD for setting a new all-time low.<\/span><br \/><span><br \/><\/span><br \/><span>To host a drag show is bad enough. To host one and then prevent students (alumni) from praying in the chapel of Catholic university is something else entirely. And then to host the event, prevent the students from praying and then have the only priest who does show up be one who supports the show&#8230;is&nbsp;appalling. Actually, no it was&nbsp;appalling&nbsp;after the first sentence of this paragraph.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span><br \/><\/span><br \/><span>The problem with Catholic higher education is not going to go away by itself. Someone *hint hint* needs to start canning these people or taking away their names as Catholics, otherwise how can we expect the Catholic faith to be cultivated? Its like a farmer who doesn&#039;t weed his field or a shepherd who allows the wolves to hang with the sheep.
