{"id":18194,"date":"2017-09-12T19:17:18","date_gmt":"2017-09-13T00:17:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jh.southloophvac.com\/?p=18194"},"modified":"2017-09-12T19:17:18","modified_gmt":"2017-09-13T00:17:18","slug":"chaput-25th-anniversary-veritatis-splendor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jonhaines.com\/philosophy\/chaput-25th-anniversary-veritatis-splendor\/","title":{"rendered":"Chaput on the 25th Anniversary of Veritatis Splendor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"noticia_byline\">First Things published a piece by Archbishop Chaput of Philadelphia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/article\/2017\/10\/the-splendor-of-truth-in-2017\">(found here)<\/a>, wherein he describes the importance of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_enc_06081993_veritatis-splendor.html\">Veritatis Splendor<\/a><\/em>, an encyclical written by St. John Paul II on the importance of philosophy in our time.\u00a0As you might expect, this is particularly important to me for three reasons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-size: 1rem\">Catholic News Agency <\/span><a style=\"font-style: italic;font-size: 1rem\" href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/archbishop-chaput-on-the-enduring-legacy-of-veritatis-splendor-41455\/\">had the opportunity<\/a><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-size: 1rem\"> to interview the Archbishop on the importance of <\/span><em style=\"font-size: 1rem\">Veritatis Splendor:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>You&#8217;ve written that &#8220;the wisdom of\u00a0<em>Veritatis splendor<\/em>\u00a0is more urgently needed than ever.&#8221; Why? What problems have compounded since its release?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We live in a liquid time. That\u2019s how the late philosopher Zygmunt Bauman described it: \u201cliquid modernity.\u201d Changes in technology, science and culture now happen very rapidly. It\u2019s hard to find firm ground where we can stand and make sense of things. The resulting confusion can undermine our beliefs about the meaning of our lives. It becomes easy to think that the basic character of the world, the nature of good and evil, the moral standards for human behavior, have somehow changed and become more ambiguous, more dependent on circumstances. But they haven\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Permanent truths about right and wrong govern our lives. The genius of\u00a0<em>Veritatis splendor<\/em>\u00a0is how persuasively it reminds us of that fact, and calls us back to what Augustine called the \u201ctranquility of order\u201d in our souls.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been thinking a lot about the Reformation lately because we mark its 500th anniversary next month. It\u2019s striking how closely the moods of then and now resemble each other \u2013 not in the specific details, but the general spirit of unrest and anticipation. Something\u2019s coming. People can feel it, some sort of \u201csecond Reformation\u201d or deep realignment in the way we engage each other and the world. That\u2019s a great opportunity for Christian hope and witness. Of course it also comes with some perils. This makes a strong grasp of truth all the more vital.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nearly 25 years later, how has\u00a0<em>Veritatis splendor<\/em>\u00a0been received in the Church in the United States?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>People have a natural thirst for solid ground and clarity. Among faithful young Catholic scholars, it\u2019s been received very well. Actually, like water in a desert.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Has it had its intended effect? What fruit has it borne in the Church and in the world?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s been a long civil war in the Church over the meaning of Vatican II. It\u2019s still with us. It probably won\u2019t end until my generation \u2013 the boomers \u2013 moves on, because persons who actually lived through the council years tend to have a deep investment in their particular version of what the council did and meant.<\/p>\n<p><em>Veritatis splendor<\/em>\u00a0is very much a fruit of the [Second Vatican] Council. Its immense value is its reaffirmation of the existence of permanent truths, its rejection of moral ambiguity, and the beauty of its presentation of truth as a source of Christian freedom and joy.
